~20ish years ago the safest thing on the road was a Volvo, but now pretty much *any* new car is safer than those older Volvos (hopefully this is reassuring).... Remember that frontal crashes are by far the most common, rear crashes being much lower on the risk scale not only because they're less common but also because the injury rates are lower.
As for the space in your backseat, well the Alpha Omega is a wide seat, not to mention a general higher tendancy for misuse in compared to many other carseats (there's a wonky top slot harness vs.
booster only use issue). It'll be much easier & less expensive to buy a new carseat. What is your child's age/weight/height?
The most important things are correct carseat use & a sober, defensive driver
