The
Radian is an option -- 49" is a guestimate total height ... since some kids are leggy while others have long torsos this is just a guideline: what's important is that the top harness slots are at about 18" up (
Britax = about 17" /
Recaro Signo = about 19" /
Safeguard Go = about 17").
I have been able to puzzle 2
RF Britax seats + 1
FF Britax or 1
RF + 2
FF in the Taurus. The
Radian is the narrowest of those options listed above &
Sunshine Kids allows using the Radian80 with child's shoulders up to 1.5" above the top harness slot. No one else does.
Worse comes to worse, assuming there is enough head support (at least eye level, preferably with room to grow), the Ride Safer Travel Vest in the center might be a good choice -- less enjoyable to buckle, but it's very safe in the center with lap belt +
top tether anchor (I dont have my
LATCH manual to know if you have a
top tether anchor point for the center?)
However, a 5.5 year old should be able to learn to use a
booster correctly -- if you don't have side curtain airbags I suggest the
Britax Parkway or
Monarch,
Compass B510,
Recaro Young Style because these meet U.S. standards as well as side impact crash testing. Showing kiddo the GM
booster video (within my website) can help teach him to use a
booster correctly. You can also engage the shoulder belt retractable locking mechanism as an added reminder to sit still.
