Default 3-in-1 rearfacing - need base?

My husband insists that our rearfacing 3-in-1 will not fit in our 2001 Ford Escape with the base attached using latch. It looks funny to me. Does it have to be on the base to be rearfacing? Should we just use the seat belt? I want to make sure our 8 mth. old is safe.

thanks.
