| Hi, I am looking for some car seat advice. I have a 3 year old who is 38.5" tall and just over 30 pounds. I also have a 9 month old who is in an infant seat and needs to be moved into a convertible seat. I bought another Roundabout for the 9mo old yesterday but realized today that the height limit is 40" and that my 3 year old might be outgrowing it. I am wondering if I should look into getting a combination seat for him like the Graco Platinum CarGo that would convert to a booster or just stick with Roundabouts for both. Any advice would be very much appreciated! |

| While weight limits are very strict ... 40" height limit is merely a guideline -- because some kids are leggy while others have long torsos: what matters is that the top of the shoulders are even with or below the top harness slots (when forward facing. If your older Roundabout is not expired & has not suffered a crash, then I would return your new one & hand the old one down to the baby (you can buy replacement covers from Britax or reliable retailers). What is your vehicle year, make, model? What is your budget I can help you sift through various options to buy a new seat for your preschooler The CarGo is not a great booster & the top harness slot height isn't really that much higher than the Roundabout.

| Hi, Thanks so much for your reply! The Roundabout that we have was purchased in '04 so it is fairly new and hasn't been in a crash (except a very minor accident where the vehicle was rear-ended). The vehicle that we have is a '04 Ford Explorer and we are currently shopping for a #2 vehicle (we have a '04 Volvo S60 and are looking for something similar). I would rather not spend more than what the Roundabout costs ($219) but if it turns out that I can spend more now to avoid buying another seat in the near future I guess it would be worth it. What would you recommend? Thanks again! |

| Britax has a free replacement policy for carseats that have been involved in a crash: their website has detailed info on that for you to find out if you qualify -- it may not need replacing, but if it does you might as get it done for free Or, you could contact your insurance company & if they deny your request ask for such in writing (they usually change their minds then) because damage usually cannot be seen with the naked eye....If I were you, I'd consider the Britax Regent. It'll keep kiddo harnessed the longest (which is safest) & you can hand it down to baby when the Roundabout does expire Your bigger kiddo will likely still need a booster afterwards, but boosters are improving so much there should be some great options by then!Another idea is to use the EZOn/SafetyAngel Kid-Y with any dedicated booster of your choice. This would be good for travel as well, just make sure that the lap belt is snugly fastened before tightening the harness. Here's another discussion about this option > http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=19056 (I would consider this a lower priority option compared to the Regent) Both of these options require top tether anchorage. Another option is the Recaro Young Sport. It is not inexpensive & has lower harness limits, but it does become one of the most dedicated boosters & is very comfortable. Recaro is a name known by many dads as the reputable racing seat designer ![]() I personally have Husky (old name for Regent) + a Cosco Apex & have used the Kid-Y & RYSport in the past, plan to purchase a new Kid-Y to use with our folding Compass B510 booster this winter in our plow truck. The Apex does not keep kids harnessed as long as these other options & is rather flimsy so I keep it in our lesser used vehicle & for use on airplanes. The RYSport & Regent are by far our favorites.

| Thanks so much for the help! I checked into the Recaro Young Sport and it looks like the height limits go up quite a bit (59") and weight up to 80 lbs as a booster. Does this mean this seat would most likely last and we would avoid needing another? That is probably a tough question to answer. I guess what I'm wondering is how tall/heavy should a child be before they aren't using a seat at all (booster or convertible)? Sorry, I'm a little ignorant about booster seats at this point. It seems to me the RYSport would take us to that point. As I'm sure you understand, I'm hoping to avoid having to buy another seat for him in the future although I know boosters are quite a bit cheaper. Anyway, I think this is the route we'll take. I found one online for $234 so not too much more than the Roundabout. Thanks again for your help!!! |

| RYSport harnesses till 40# with 17" tall top harness slots & then becomes a truly dedicated booster to last kiddo until he can safely ride without any safety seat.... We loved ours, but my daughter is tall & wiggly so she just wasn't quite ready to use a booster when she outgrew its harness Kids must pass the 5 Step Test to ride safely without a booster + here's another version > http://www.usa.safekids.org/CPSWeek2...-belt-test.pdf

| Keep in mind that now EZOn allows their Kid-Y/86Y to be used with any booster, so for only about $50 you can get this additional harness to use later on if your kiddo isn't quite ready for only a booster after outgrowing the built in harness ![]()
