Default Honda Element

I just bought my son the Britax Marathon but with the Element I have to crawl across the passenger side to get him because of the suicide doors. It is such a pain! I also have trouble getting his harness tight. Does anyone have experience with the Element and carseats. Any advice! I told my husband that it would be impossible to have 2 kids in that car if even one of them was rear facing.

Thanks!

Default Honda Element

I just registered to ask the same question! I have a Honda Element and have been using my Compass infant seat in it just fine. But my son is about to outgrow it and we got an Britax Boulevard. I tried it in the car and have no idea how I'm going to get him in and out! We have a dog crate shoved in next to the seat with the carseat (the other back seat is removed from the car).

I'm seriously considering getting a minivan at this point, as much as I dislike the gas mileage and the idea... With 2 medium dogs and the baby, the Element has become too small!

Perhaps the Sunshine Kids Radian65 would be better suited to this vehicle? Not sure how well/easily it installs on the seat, but it has a nice low profile which should be much easier -- although it doesn't have "TSIP" all 5 point harnesses (especially RF) are *very* safe in the outboard position when they're used correctly....

Also, the dogs become dangerous projectiles in a crash (20 pounds becomes 600 pounds of force in a 30 MPH crash) so you should have a barrier designed by the vehicle manufacturer specific to the vehicle and/or restrain them to the tether/cargo hooks or unused seatbelt with an IMMI PetBuckle or RuffRiderRoadie (IMMI is the maker of carseat harnesses, etc.) Other harnesses or gates are not reliable.

Default What about the middle position...

I know the Element doesn't have a middle position really, but we have managed to get a really tight, extended rear-facing installation with our Roundabout using LATCH and the versa-tether (under the seat) in that middle position. The middle seems so much safer...

Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts from professionals?

What does the vehicle manual say? If the vehicle manual does not show carseat installation there or make any mention of being able to use the inner anchors from outboard LATCH for a center install, then it is not allowed....

I'm not sure what you mean by "under the seat" for the tether? If you're not hooking it to a designated anchor then it's not safe.

The safest place is wherever you can achieve a CORRECT installation as per both carseat + vehicle manuals.

Default Fellow Element Mom here...

Hi, we just bought the Britax Marathon and have an Element as well. I agree that having 2 kids in the back seat will be impossible (if one of them is in a rear facing convertible seat). I assume that front facing will be fine.

I decided to put the convertible seat in the rear of the passenger side so I can crawl back from my side (driver's side) to get them in and out.

Also, do your kids legs hit the back of the seat? Mine does, and I'm concerned that she is too scrunchy.

Still love my Element though...

Bent legs are absolutely NOT a safety concern whatsoever Scandinavian kids ride RF until about 3-5 years old (or 50#) & we do not have a single recorded case of leg injury ... we do have many many many broken necks from FF too soon, though Regardless: we can fix broken legs relatively easily, but cannot fix broken necks!
