Default Convertible RF Seat for Subaru

We have a 2005 Saab 92-X wagon, which is a Subaru Impreza wagon in disguise. Our daughter will be 9 months on August 23 and is 25th percentile for weight and height, so not huge. Her current Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP RF infant seat works well (provided that we are very careful about not reclining the front passenger seat very much -- we did have this installation inspected) but we're trying to figure out what convertible seat will work when the time inevitably comes. She currently is about 68 cm (I think that's nearly 27 inches) and 17-18 pounds.

We are currently looking at convertible seats.

I was initially taken with the Sunshine Kids Radian80 SuperCool seat, since it was billed as good for small vehicles and airplane seats, folds, has the unique fabric to keep kids cooler/less sweaty, and seems to grow with the child for a long time. However, we were advised in the store that this seat will not work RF due to the size constraints in the Saab 92-X wagon; or rather, it will work RF but we will lose the front passenger seat. To retain use of the front passenger seat with a RF car seat, we were advised to go with the Britax Roundabout.

Our other vehicle is a 2003 Pontiac Vibe (also marketed as a Toyota Matrix). We received similar feedback about the Radian80 RF fit in this vehicle.

Three questions:
1) Is the Britax Roundabout the only seat we can contemplate for a safe RF installation without losing our front passenger seat? Can you recommend any others? [Note that while taking it on an airplane would be nice, we're really most concerned about our daily drives!]

2) If we decide to lose the front passenger seat, would you recommend Sunshine Kids Radian80 as both a RF and FF seat for both our vehicles?

3) While safety is the primary factor in selecting a seat, can you recommend any seats that offer "cool" fabrics or covers to help reduce in-seat sweat and overheating? I can only see that this is going to become a bigger problem as our daughter becomes older.

Thank you so much!

The Radian might fit in the center using seatbelt so that you can still fit tall adults in the front seats -- I don't know for sure ... but it would be worth it to try it out & visit a local tech for final hands on answer

Both Radian65 + Radian80 make great seats RF because of the tetherability (Radian65 is cheaper because it doesn't have the pillows) & both are also great for FF (Radian80 also costs more because of the higher weight limit, but a child who is not obese will outgrow both seats by height 1st since the height limit is the same on each). All that said, what matters most is being able to install it correctly/securely.

Gosh, I really don't know about this: I only know that the Fisher Price Safe Voyage (+ Deluxe version) are sweaty & that my Britax Bouevard had some sort of ventilation design. I'd start by calling carseat manufacturers' toll free numbers to ask them

i have a subaru impreza wagon. i don't have an answer to your question, though, because i'm fairly short (5'4"), so our answer was to put the convertible RF behind the driver's seat (it's my car) and when we went out as a family i'd drive. i was able to fit just fine with our RF Evenflo Triumph behind me - but you really could not have scooted the drivers seat any further back. DH's legs would've been squished if it had been behind the passenger seat.

i do know that if it's not going to fit behind the passenger seat without squishing the legs of the front passenger, it won't work in the middle - at least, we tried that with our Evenflo Triumph and all it did was make *both* driver and passenger seats unable to push back past a certain point.

This usually is not the case It may have simply been an incompatability with that specific carseat in that particular vehicle -- incompatability is fairly common, but usually it does help to put the carseat in the center (so long as it fits correctly as per both vehicle + carseat manual & with less than 1" movement at the belt path)
