I have no idea what the most important features are to look for. Of course, safety is my number #1 priority with cost following closely behind. I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla and am thinking of getting the Evenflo Triumph 5. I also like the Cosco/Safety 1st Apex 65 because it turns into a booster and will last longer. Unfortunately, my son will outgrow his infant seat at 22 lbs. and the minimum weight on this is 22 lbs. It seems like I'd be cutting it too close with the switch. Also, this is only front facing. Does the baby have to stay rear facing until 1 year? Any reviews or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if I sound like an idiot...I have a very high needs baby and haven't had much time to research the topic. ![]()

What is your budget like? How old is your baby and how much does he/she weigh? Where is his/her head in relation to the top of the shell of the infant seat? YSE YES YES, babies have to stay rf to a MINIMUM of one year AND 20 lbs. but that is the BARE minimum. rf is sooo much safer than ff! Here, read this and watch the crash test videos at the bottom. It explains it very well. http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/stayrearfacing.aspx My dd is 2 1/2 and still rf and loving it! Lara

Thanks for the information. My son is 8 months old, 19 lbs. and has about 2 inches before the top of his head is at the top off the infant shell. What I would like to spend and what I'm willing to spend to insure his safety are two very different things...so, while budget is a considering factor, I'm willing to forgo it for safety. I would however like to avoid the expensive Britax models if possible. I was reading a consumer reports article that stated some seats didn't perform as well in the rear facing position at their weight limits http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/b...view/index.htm...which my son is quickly approaching and is what got me wondering if he needs to stay rear facing. That and the fact that he ABSOLUTELY HATES going anywhere in his car seat and throws screaming fits (even just to the grocery store some days). I thought facing him forward might help, but if he needs to stay rear facing for as long as possible maybe a seat that is a little more upright would be helpful.

| Rear facing is best for as long as possble. Your son still has time left in his infant seat which will allow you to try seats and research them a little. My son hated the car as well as an infant but he started to like it more once he was in a convertable car seat (one that can go both rear facing and forward facing) because it was higher up. There is the Radian by sunshine kids and there is the fisher price safe voyage (which is manufactured by britax, and is the same seat shell as the marathon; it's weight limit is lower, and doesn't tether rear facing) both these seats have a high top harness slot which will mean you can use it longer. I believe you can get these seats on line for $150-180ish. The Radian can be a little hard to install so you will want to try it out first before you make a decision. What kind of vehicle do you have?

The dummies consumer reports used where the seat supposedly performed poorly are 33 pound, 38 inch tall dummies, on a test bench that looks nothing like an actual car. I know you want to avoid Britax, but I just want to be sure you know the consumer reports testing is invalid and the seats are perfectly safe for use all the way up to the recommended weight limit, rearfacing to 33 pounds, forward facing to 65 pounds. The Cosco Scenera is a really nice bargain choice, very easy to use seat, and only $40... Just so you know, the lower LATCH anchors in the middle of the Corolla can't be used to install a car seat...if you want to install any seat in the middle, you must use the seatbelt. Good luck finding a seat that fits! Last edited by JoolsPlus3; 11-17-2006 at 11:09 AM.

Yes, it only has LATCH anchors on the sides. I'm not trying to avoid the Britax b/c of the consumer reports, but b/c it is one of the highest priced. I don't mind spending the money on a seat if I need to for safety (especially if it's going to last), but I also don't want to spend extra money for a name. I'm not sure if that is the case...I know Britax seats rate well for safety too. Most importantly, I need a quality convertible car seat that will fit rf in my compact car. Currently, we have the Graco Snugride behind the passenger seat, which has to be moved forward. I fit in the passenger seat, but my husband (who is 6'2") doesn't. Cost is only a consideration after considering safety and fit in my car. Of course, if spending more on a seat means I won't have to buy another one until my son's in a booster, then that's also worthwhile. Also, as mentioned before, my son HATES being in the car. Do all RFing seats recline the same. Or, could he sit a little more upright to possibly alleviate his screaming? If I could find a seat that sits up a little more, I could also hopefully have a little more leg room…not that that really matters, since I’m always in the backseat trying to soothe my little one. Again, safety and fit are my top priorities. I like the Sunshine Kids Radian, but am worried it won’t fit well RF. There aren’t any stores near me that carry it, so I’d have to order it online and hope for the best. The Cosco Scenera is very inexpensive. How does it rate as far as safety features? Thanks to everyone for all of your help!
