Default LATCH or Seatbelt? Which is the safer method of installing?

I was told by my BIL & SIL that a carseat expert they know says that using the seatbelt rather then the LATCH is safer (he says the LATCH is just easier). Is this true? Any data?

To my knowledge, neither is proven to be safer -- they both serve the same purpose ... the "best" is whichever is easiest to achieve a correct (as per both carseat + vehicle manuals) & secure (less than 1" movement at the LATH or seatbelt path) installation. Sometimes LATCH is easier, sometimes it's not.
