Default Need advice on rear facing Carseats

We have a 6 month old who is in a rear facing carseat and I found out we are expecting another baby this summer.

The problem is that with the infant seat we bought (Graco SafeSeat?? The one that holds up to 30 pounds....) We can't fit another one in our van. It would have to go behind the driver's seat and the seat we have it to bulky. (I have the passenger seat up almost all the way.)

So are there convertable seats that would take up less room then the infant seat I have???

I just have a feeling my 6 month old won't be close to the size to front face him by the time the baby is born. (Besides I would prefer to rear face as long as possiable for safety reasons.)

The infant carrier is likely taking up a lot of room b/c it is a 45 degree angle. You can get a convertible seat and hav it reclined between 30-45 degrees. The recline doesn't have to be at that FULL recline for older children. As long as your child's head doesn't fall forward when sleeping in the seat, then that particular angle is perfect. I would head to a Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, etc and try seats in your vehicle. I do know that the Compass TruFit is being released and you can remove the headrest on it so it is shorter (doing it that way, though, you can only RF to 22lbs..if you put the headrest back ON it, it will RF to 33lbs)

DEFINITELY lean toward convertible seats that harness your child the longest. Those would be Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathlon, Evenflo Triumph Advance, Recaro Como or Signo, Sunshine Kids Radian 65 or 80, Compass TrueFit.

I completely agree with getting the higher weight convertible carseats that hold 65+ lbs. I have a Britax Marathon and was able to fit it in my 2-door truck rear-facing with very few issues. Good job with picking the Safeseat! This means that your second little one can ride in that until your first angel is past the 33-35lb RF limit and you can transfer seats (as long as they arent expired) to a FF seat like the Britax Regent for baby #1.
Babies R Us is more than happy to have an employee take any of their carseats out to your vehicle so that you can try their fit, I recommend you do this! Good luck!

Congratulations! I just wanted to add that our son was in the Graco SafeSeat1 behind the passenger seat in our Ford Expedition until about 9 months old when he was close to outgrowing it by height. We now have him in the Recaro Signo(rear-facing) and it does give us an extra couple inches between the seat and car seat.

As babies mature---especially as they get close to a year +, they no longer need teh 45 degree recline that a newborn does to keep their airway open.

When you switch to a convertible seat, you can install the seat a bit more upright. Most convertibles take up less space RF than the infant only seats that were in the same place.

Also--you don't want to turn your child FF until they have outgrown the limits of the convertible RF. RF is the safest way to ride---I wish I could do it!
