| Hi all- Looking for a good alternative to the Regent for DH's 96 Explorer (non LATCH with no highback seats or head rests). My son is currently in a Regent in my 03 Forester and a Roundabout in the Explorer. Problem is he is above the Roundabout (not sure where his shoulders are but his head is above the top and that makes me nervous) right now. I travel with my son a bit and would like a lighter weight seat to take with me on planes and install in a rental car by myself. I'm worried the Radian may not last long enough or fit the Explorer well. DS is 39.5", 34 lbs and 3.5 y.o. I think he's pretty evenly split torso v legs. Thanks for your help! MM |

| None of the higher weight options that are lightweight enough for travel would also work in a vehicle with no high seatbacks or top tether anchors. The Radian is a good travel option because it folds, but it is not lightweight. It's narrow, though. The Safeguard GO is a perfect travel seat, but it requires top tethers and high vehicle seatback or headrests.I would consider getting top tether anchors in the Explorer and using the Regent there. The thing is, your child is only safe in that vehicle as long as he still fits in harnessed seats or highback boosters. A lowback seat is not safe for anyone. Everyone needs head support at least up to the tips of the ears. The Regent will fit most kids to age 8-10. The Radian will fit most kids to age 6-7. The Safeguard child seat will fit most kids to age 8. There's also the Safety 1st/Cosco Apex with top slots comparable to the Radian's, but it requires high vehicle seatback or headrest behind it at all times because it is not reinforced enough to provide head support in a crash. And then there's the Kid Y harness and Ride Ryte booster. This requires a top tether. The booster provides the head support, but it's fairly short overall. Not sure if it would last longer than a Regent or not.
