I am a first time mom with an 11 month old son - shortly we will need to take him out of his Graco Safeseat because of his height...I'm alittle confused as to what type of seat to purchase for a 1 year old. What is the difference between the convertible seats and the combination seats and is one better then another between those two types? I'm not sure what type of seat to be looking for. I have a Honda CRV and my hubby has a Honda Accord.

A convertible seat is a seat that can be used both rear facing and forward facing. A combination seat can be used only forward facing with a 5 point harness and then later as a booster seat with the lap shoulder belt. The minimum to turn your son forward facing is that he must be one year old AND 20 lbs. However, keep in mind this is the minimum. Many people including the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend keeping them rear facing as long as possible. Many convertible seats accomadate a child rear facing up to 35 lbs (it varies seat to seat). As far as what type of seat to buy, much of it depends on whether you are going to be able or want to turn him forward facing at 12 mo. If you want to keep him rear facing then you would want to look for a convertible seat. If you are prepared to turn him forward facing, as long as he meets the minimum requirements, you may want to look for a combination seat. Good Luck! Andrea

I won't be switching him to the next carseat until absolutely necessary and will keep him rear facing as long as possible even in this one. I have been debating now back and forth between the Britax Marathon, Britax Roundabout and Britax Boulevard....any opinions?

The Marathon and Boulevard both have higher weight limits than the Roundabout, when forward facing, so personally I would look at them. The Boulevard is supposed to have more side impact protection, but I don't really know how much difference that would make?? Some people dont care for the Boulevard because it is a little bigger and bulkier than the Marathon, while others like it and think it is safer. I would look at them in the store and go with what you think would fit your car the best. Andrea

| There are four necessary carseat steps for child passenger safety: 1. Infant or convertible 2. Convertible or Combination or FF only ... after AT LEAST 12 months old 3. Booster (with seatbelt) 4. Seatbelt (only) A convertible seat is necessary after an infant seat & should remain RF until the MAXIMUM limits even well beyond the 1st year. Combination seats are not a necessary step so long as the child is harnessed in either a convertible or other FF seat until at least 4 years + 40 pounds. Also, babies very rarely fit infant seats safely until a full 12 months (except for the Graco SafeSeat Step1) -- infant seats are outgrown when the top of the head is within 1" of the inside edge of the hard shell/fram of the carseat. I would only consider the Roundabout if you absolutely want Britax yet have a small vehicle with tall adults. It's just so expensive for a seat with such low harness limits. Either the Marathon or Boulevard would keep kiddo safer longer. If your vehicle has poor side impact ratings or lacks rear side curtain airbags + you cannot install the carseat in the center, then I would prefer the Boulevard. Otherwise, if you can install in the center and/or the vehicle has good side impact crash test ratings or rear side curtain airbags, then the Marathon would be great ![]()
