Default Any way to get 3 across in a VW Passat Wagon?

We're expecting a third child in November, and our two older children will be 5 and 2.5 when #3 is born. #1 is in a FF Britax Marathon and is around 38 pounds; #2 is in a RF Boulevard and is only 20 pounds (she's TINY and I'd like to keep her RF as long as possible.) Both are installed outboard. Currently there's no room in the middle for a third seat (or even a third person, there's just no room!). I don't think we can afford to buy a minivan or another new car right now.

Is there any way to fit 3 carseats across in a 1999 VW Passat Wagon? I'd love love love to keep our Britaxes and keep #1 in a 5 point full carseat but I have to consider whether it makes more sense to buy narrower carseats and put #1 in a booster.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Think that the best bet is to move up to a booster. If you slide the two car seats to the outside of seat, you can probably squeeze in # 3 there. However, make sure its not a lapbelt.. Either over the shoulder or a convertible 5point harnes/over-shoulder belt booster seat.

Switching to booster usually makes it MORE difficult -- less room for buckling (compared to harness). However, finding the right seats to fit your children & vehicle as well as which can always be used correctly could be quite a process.... Each carseat must be installed independent of the other 2: secure install is when there's less than 1" movement at the belt path.

To equalize risk, we would ideally want the RF kids outboard with FF kid in center. However, the best placement is whichever location provides the most secure install as per both carseat + vehicle manuals!

The narrowest convertible carseat on the market is the Sunshine Kids Radian. It fits less vehicles as easily as Britax (so make sure the retailer has a good return/exhange policy) but it also has lower bottom slots & higher top slots to fit both smaller babies & bigger kids better than Britax. It can tether RF like Britax I think the Snug Ride or Chicco Keyfit are the narrowest infant carseat options. The only other option I can think of is the Ride Safer Travel Vest for your oldest to use center (you should be able to have a top tether anchor installed -- what year is your vehicle?)

Have you contacted your local CPST Perhaps they can check your current carseats, help you puzzle them in with room for an infant seat?

Thanks for the responses!

It's a 1999 Passat wagon, so we've had it retrofitted with lower anchor points but it doesn't have top tethers. When we had it retrofitted by the dealership, they said it wasn't possible to install top tether points. We tether the RF Boulevard to the metal frame of the front passenger seat.

I'm actually not that interested in getting an infant seat because I hate the buckets. We had a Snugride with ds and a Britax Companion with dd, and I thought they were a PITA. So I'd rather get a convertible for the new baby from the start.

There's absolutely no way to get a third carseat of whatever width in the car with our existing carseats as it is, no matter where we put them -- there's just no room back there.

Thanks for the recommendation on the Radian -- I was reading elsewhere that it's really tough to install safely, is that your experience or not?

Thanks again!

I personally have only installed the Radian in a slightly older Chevy van with flat bench + reclinable seatback + ALR belts.... I myself have not seen the inside of a VW made after the 1980s But here's what my SafeRideNews LATCH manual says:
Quote:
3 tether anchor points located in the seatback (some require seat back change).
Anchor Bracket #443887269
Cover #443887301C01C
Bolt #N01024118
Try calling the vehicle manufacturer directly, referencing Tech Bulletin #690101
