Best infant car seat for mitsubishi

I have a 2006 Mitsubishi eclipse and I'm having the hardest time
trying to find a car seat that is suitable for my car.
I've looked at Recaro convertible carseats, Key Fit infant car seats, and
Britax convertible car seats. Are any of these good in general? and will any of these work for my car?

Since you have a smaller car, I would suggest trying to find an infant car seat to start with a higher than average harness weight capacity like the Chicco Key Fit 30 or Graco Safe Seat Step 1. Both go up to 30 lbs. rear-facing. The reason I recommend this is that normally there are few issues installing a larger convertible seat unless you are installing and using it rear-facing. This way once baby has outgrown the infant seat, you could move into a forward-facing convertible or combination seat.

Any of the seats you mentioned are great seats. They all meet the same Federal requirements for safety and the Chicco Key Fit is one of the easiest seats to install - Consumer Reports even agrees!

As far as actual fit in your vehicle, I wish I could be of ore help. There is no data for the 2006 Eclipse in the database yet but I did look up the Eclipse in general and the only infant seat installed that we have info on is the Graco Snugride. And most of those showed a poor fit. The only acceptable fit was this infant seat in the center of the back seat.
Not sure how much the Eclipse has changed over the years (I'm sure quite a bit) but it looks like the 96 model fit the old Britax Freeway forward-facing well which should mean that you should be able to get the Britax Roundabout and Britax Diplomat to work. However, I would try one with a higher harness weight capacity like the Britax Marathon, Britax Decathlon, Britax Boulevard, RECARO Como or RECARO Signo first and know if one of those don't work forward-facing that the other two Britax seats should be a safe fallback option. The Roundabout and Diplomat only work with children up to 40 lbs. in the harness as opposed to the others working up to 65 - 70 lbs.

How old is the Child? What is the weight of the child?

The "best" infant seat is the one that will install properly in your car, will be used correctly everytime, and fits the child. Some have more "ease of use" features, or will last your child longer.


If I remember correctly the Mitsubishi Eclipses have a VERY steep recline on the seat bottoms. This causes seat installation issues for small babies because they really need that 45 degree recline. Once the child is old enough to hold the head up that 45degree isn't always needed. You can have the seat angled all the way up to 30 degrees (but no more).

I highy recommend the Chicco keyfit 30, or the Grace Safeseat. They both go to 30lbs, and typically are very easy to install. The Base on the safeseat is raises quite a bit to ensure you get a 45 degree recline.

The best thing to do is to go to your local BRU store (or whatever), and try these seats out in your vehicle before purchasing. Many of the stores will allow you do this. Either an employee will follow you outside, or they may have you leave your driver's license at the counter.
