Default infant car seat recommendation

Can someone recommend a safe infant car seat that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I already have a Britax Marathon and from what I've read, a newborn is too small to fit in that. So now I'm looking for an infant car seat. I really don't want to spend too much and of course I want it to be as safe as possible, it's just that the marathon was quite costly and seems like a lot of money to spend for something that the baby will only be in for about 6 months.

Thanks!

The Graco Snugride is a basic, relatively low-cost favorite for many techs & advocates -- fits newborns well, installs in most vehicles well + it's pretty easy to use.... Just make sure that it's the front adjust version (having to fix the harness strap from the back is a real hassle & more often leads to misuse unless parents very diligent).

The Graco SafeSeat Step1 also fits newborns well, but also fits bigger babies longer so although it might cost more up front, it ends up being quite cost effective in the long term. It is also easy to use & fits most vehicles very well. You don't have to carry baby in it all the time, but being able to keep the seat at room temp longer is a nice comfort option in extreme climates. Plus, you can keep spare bases installed in alternate vehicles to make rides with Grandma or whoever that much easier & in an emergency it can be used without a base.

However, the Marathon would probably fit 9+ pound newborns fine (mine didn't fit until about 4-6 months old, though)

How about the Roundabout? Would that fit a newborn? I haven't determined yet if I will be able to fit the Marathon in my Impreza. I still need to play with it. Just thought the Roundabout would be a last resort option.

Thanks!

The Roundabout has the same bottom slot measurement as the Marathon -- the Marathon just has a taller shell with an extra top slot to allow bigger kids to stay harnessed longer....

I'd like to add that Subaru buckles are known for being very long: you can rotate the short end up to three full 360 twists or you can buy a seatbelt extender.

Also, I'd like to address the issue in the database about the base not being flush with the vehicle seat cushion. So long as less than 20% of the base hangs over the edge of the cushion & it moves less than 1" at the belt path (with the required 45 degree angle for newborns) then it's a safe install.
