Default New seat for 4y.o.?

This might be a little long, sorry. Thanks for reading.

Ds will be 4 next month. He's currently in a FPSV. He's in the top slots, but has some room to grow and is about 38lbs. I can measure him tomorrow, but he's sleeping now. I'd like to get him a second seat so that he has one in each car. I'm leaning towards moving the FPSV to dh car- basic sedan, full latch, low seat backs. Then I'd get him a new seat for my car. I have an 02 Grand Caravan. I'd prefer him in the 3rd row, so I can keep the 2 RF seats (Marathons) in the middle row. My 3rd row has shoulder belts outboard, lap belt center. No latch and only spot with a top teather is the center. I have headrests on the outboard spots, but the middle is a very low seatback. I also have Gen 3 seatbelts that lock at the buckle rather than the shoulder (does that make sense?), so I can't "lock" the belt once I move him to a booster. So I'd like him in a 5 point as long as possible. He also still falls asleep in the car quite a bit. He's USUALLY the only one in the 3rd row, but I do sometimes have my friends ds in a Britax booster (sorry, not sure which one) or an adult back there. We are also considering a fourth child, probably not for another two years, by which point the Marathons would probably be FF.

So I'm thinking a Regent or a Graco Nautilus? I'm a bit worried about the size of the Regent and if I can get a good fit, especially since the outboard spots don't have top teathers. I don't know much about the Nautilus. How much of a difference is there in the height of the top slots? And how long would that extra height last an average kid? I'm also open to any other seats that might work.

Grandma also wants a seat for her car, which should be an easy one. Newer SUV, high seatbacks, full latch, leather seats. But a bit more of a budget on this one (Grandma's buying). It doesn't have to be a super easy install (I'd install it), but I want something that's easy for her to buckle, adjust, ect. Nautilus? Apex? Any other ideas?

Thanks so much.

I think the Graco Nautilus sounds good for your car. How bout an Apex for Grandma's car? They can be found for around $80, the only downfall to the Apex is that it MUST have support from the car's seat behind it, and it sounds like it does.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Anyone seen the Graco one yet? I'm wondering how much growing room he will have in it?

Well, the top slots for the FPSV are about 17". The Nautilus is 18-18.5" (depending on who is measuring..LOL!). There is no need for headrests behind it. I have seen several kiddos in the seat, but of course, they are all different. None of our walmarts (closest one is an hour away...ha!) have them. I am going to another walmart that is 2 hours from here on Thursday, so if they have them, I will measure. The Apex is the same height as the FP. If he is already in the top slots of the FP, he will have no room to grow in the Apex. The regent is the tallest one (19"), but as you said, it is a HUGE seat. Do you have a babies r us, USA baby, burlington coat factory or specialty baby store near you? They usually have hte Regent in stock, so you would be able to take it out to your vehicle and try it out. I drive a Tahoe. I have 2 Regents in my 2nd row and there isn't much room in the middle...at all. You definitely would need the tether anchor, so you would have to install it in the middle.

Thanks, that was really helpful. I do have a Walmart close by, so I think I'll have to go check out the Graco. If I want to see a Regent in person I'll have to drive at least an hour. Unless Toys R Us has them, but I doubt it. I'm thinking I won't be able to fit anyone else in my back row if I put a Regent in the middle.

Last question, does the Graco have to be tethered or could I put it outboard in the 3rd row?

Also - you can buy the seats from elitecarseats.com and buy the return shipping insurance - that way you can return it for very low cost.

The graco does NOT have to be tethered, but it is always recommended for all FFing seats.

Thumbs up Thanks!

I'm learning so much just from "eavesdropping" on other's questions/answers. Thanks for all the info you have shared! I'm still confused on my own purchase, so I started my own thread!
